How can Homeowners help a job run smoothly?

The key to a succesful project is a two way process. So below is our 7 Top tips for being a good customer...

1. Appreciate

Money isn’t everything. Saying thank you and acknowledging a good job will make your tradesperson feel valued. Its more likely to boost their moral and only improve their desire to please you in return.

2. Prepare

Clear areas ahead of works starting. There’s nothing more frustrating for a tradesperson than having to unexpectedly move loads of personal belongings or furniture before they can start the work they quoted for. It’s not a nice way to start the day. If you expect to need a hand moving bits then maybe give them the heads up when they come to quote or send them a quick message.

3. Cover up

If you need to leave certain items in rooms then cover them up with old sheets. Your tradesperson may not have enough with them to cover adequately.

4. Be Clear

If you have a clear idea of how you would like something then do say. It saves a lot of time and unnecessary remedial work. Everyone has different styles/approaches and tradespeople aren’t mind readers! Likewise, be sympathetic that sometimes not everything is possible, or at least within projects constraints, so be prepared to make reasonable compromises.

5. Refreshments

Nobody expects silver service, but it’s nice to offer a drink first thing and perhaps at lunch. If it’s a warm day then offer cold drinks. Throw in a few biscuits and you might be contender for customer of the year!!

6. Communicate

If you hit delays or change the specification leading up to the job then keep your tradesperson informed. Managing a Schedule and fitting everything in is one of the worst parts of being a self employed tradesperson, so it will help them to manage their workload. When the job has started, Be contactable at all times, you never know why your tradesperson might need you. It could be an emergency or just a simple clarification.

7. Finally, Pay well

Self employed Tradespeople often have the concern of cash flow. If a jobs complete and you are happy then pay promptly. You will certainly be prioritised for future work if you do this!
