The key to a succesful project is a two way process. So below is our 7 Top tips for being a good customer...
Money isn’t everything. A simple "thank you" or acknowledgment of a job well done can go a long way. Making your tradesperson feel valued boosts their morale and encourages them to go the extra mile to exceed your expectations.
Take some time to clear the area where work will take place. Tradespeople often encounter unexpected obstacles, such as furniture or personal items left in the way. A clutter-free workspace allows them to start on the right foot and focus on the job. If you need assistance moving things, let them know in advance—they’ll appreciate the heads-up.
If certain items can’t be removed from the workspace, cover them with old sheets or plastic. While tradespeople often bring protective materials, they may not have enough for everything. Taking this step shows you’re considerate of the environment they’re working in.
Have a specific idea of how you want things to look? Don’t hesitate to share! Clear instructions upfront save time and help avoid unnecessary revisions. Remember, tradespeople aren’t mind readers. However, be prepared to compromise if your requests aren’t feasible due to project constraints—they’ll appreciate your flexibility.
A simple gesture like offering tea, coffee, or cold drinks can make a big difference. On a hot day, a cold beverage goes a long way. And if you throw in some biscuits, you’re well on your way to becoming their favorite customer!
Keep your tradesperson informed about any changes to the project or timeline. Tradespeople juggle multiple jobs, and unexpected delays can disrupt their schedule. During the job, ensure you’re reachable—they might need your input for urgent decisions or clarifications.
Cash flow is often a concern for self-employed tradespeople. If the work is completed to your satisfaction, settle the invoice promptly. Quick payment not only fosters goodwill but also increases the likelihood of being prioritized for future jobs.
